As a dermatologist, one of the most common questions people ask is what they should be using on their skin. I recommend keeping skin routines simple by choosing a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen.
Here are some tips to help you choose the right products for your skin. Get to know your skin
Is your skin typically oily, dry, normal, or a combination of these?
This can be challenging to think about if you are using products that may cause dryness and irritation or leave behind an oily residue.
Consider how your skin feels after using a cleanser immediately and thirty minutes to an hour after washing your face. If it feels dry or oily, you may need to switch your cleanser. It should not strip too much oil from your face or make it feel oily or greasy.
I recommend switching to a gentle (low pH) cleanser for normal to oily skin (if you tend to be oily in some areas such as the T-zone) or normal to dry skin for a few weeks. Reassess how your skin feels after this time period. If you like the way your skin responds, you are on the right track. If not, it may be time to see a board certified dermatologist to discuss your skin concerns and find the right cleanser for you.
Once you know your skin type and find the right cleanser, finding a moisturizer and sunscreen is much easier. For oil-prone skin, oil free moisturizers and sunscreens are recommended. If your skin tends to be dry, choose a moisturizer made for dry skin. Avoid heavy oils such as olive oil as it can clog pores and worsen acne.
Keeping your skin routine simple is the best way to find the right products for you. Once you have the basics, you can build upon this foundation and add more products based on your specific skin care concerns.
